You might try the -S, -y and/or -Y options to "hdparm"
- I haven't tried it myself tho, so Caveat Emptor !  

The use of hdparm in this way, esp. -Y,  *might*
bypass the higher control layers that are there to
schedule the disk sleep mode at the proper times...

Generally this feature might be more trouble than it's
worth on machines other than laptops/notebooks......
