Other points I intended to make about this:  Aside from the echo issues 
associated with each 4W/2W transition, every A/D and D/A adds a small 
amount of quantizing distortion.  Toll grade transmission standards 
place a restriction on the number of such conversions.  Another reason 
to avoid inserting * between 2W analog machines if avoidable.  Then 
there is the delay...
