For domestic calls, I dial a leading '0' in lieu of the '44'. And prefix
international calls with '010' plus country code.
This relates to the "Strowger Era". Because nowadays the UK uses the
harmonised European international access code "00".
Most STD codes are now in the format "01XXX", with "02XXX" etc
available for new provision. "07XXX" for cellphones/pagers. "09XXX" for
premium rate services.
My city, Portsmouth, has had three different codes in the last 8 years
or so! Starting as 0705, then becoming 01705, finally changing to
023-92. (The 023 being the area code, with 92 prefixing the local 6
number, making them 8 digits long). Confusing, or what?
