For domestic calls, I dial a leading '0' in lieu of the '44'. And prefix 
international calls with '010' plus country code.
 This relates to the "Strowger Era". Because nowadays the UK uses the 
harmonised European international access code "00".
 Most STD codes are now in the format "01XXX",  with  "02XXX"  etc 
available for new provision. "07XXX" for cellphones/pagers. "09XXX" for 
premium rate services.
 My city, Portsmouth, has had three different codes in the last 8 years 
or so! Starting as 0705, then becoming 01705, finally changing to 
023-92. (The 023 being the area code, with 92 prefixing the local  6 
number, making them 8 digits long). Confusing, or what?
