That is most interesting.  I have an older APC UPS (it's so old that is 
says "American Power Conversion" on the front instead of APC) here that 
powered my broadband stuff just fine in our recent outage until the 
batteries ran down.  My DSL and router stayed up and running when the power 
initially went out, and stayed up until I shut everything down when it was 
clear that the power wasn't coming back any time soon.  After that I had no 
difficulties operating the DSL modem and router on what was left of the 
batteries in the UPS, then later off a small (140W) inverter and a car 
battery or the 5 kW generator that I was powering critical items in the 
house with.

Are your sure it's your UPS to blame for the DSL connection going out, and 
not your neighborhood concentrator or remote switch that is perhaps 
glitching at the same time as your home's power?
