A decade ago a friend of mine owned a Panasonic FAX machine which used a
4P jack for the LINE connection. Once the notoriously robust latching
key broke off the plug on the original telephone line cord supplied by
Panasonic, no substitute cord was readily available. I doubt this was
an intentional ploy to sell line cords. Most likely Panasonic would not
even have been able to supply the cord at the point when this happened.
More likely (judging from my own personal dealings with Japanese telecom
engineers), the person who chose this was working in a vacuum, was not
aware of standards and assumed that a 4 position jack had sufficient
capacity to do the job. The solution was to make a custom cord.
So Panasonic, while their equipment is generally pretty good, is/are
also a flagrant inventor of non-standards.
