This keyboard business is another reason I switched from a PC to a router to host Asterisk.

What I do is take an old keyboard, and get rid of all the keys. Then
it's just a circuit board on the end of a keyboard cable, but it looks
like a keyboard to the computer. You can wrap it in electrical tape
or heat-shrink tubing, and put it inside the machine (cable through
the back) to save even more space.
