[VoIP] Question about Asterisk & Wireless IP Phones

Hello,

I am wondering if it would be possible to use a wireless IP phone in 
conjunction 
with Asterisk such that I could take the wireless IP phone and use it 
anywhere I can 
get wireless internet access (to subsequently use my Asterisk setup).

I do not know the details of the wireless IP phones, but I've seen them on 
the 
shelves at computer stores. I don't mean to ask a trivial question, but I'm 
at a point 
with VoIP that I don't know what I don't know. I'm wondering if there are 
any 
wireless handsets that are "open" to custom configuring.

If this is possible, due to the increasing presence of wireless hot spots, 
it would be 
almost like a cellphone without a monthly fee (that is, a fee beyond the 
obvious 
costs of maintaining your own network and computer equipment).
