[VoIP] Bogus CallerID (oops)

Rusty,

I forgot I think we have spoken before. Sorry I didn't recall. We have
PRIs off the BLVLMIBV to our Western Wayne Regional HQ. They can't do or
choose not to support 5E emulation and have a problem with some maintenance
commands. We interface as NI2 as that is all that SBC claimed they could
support at the time. Funny how this close to Detroit Metro area, actually
in it, that switch got placed. SBC / Ameritech seemd to prefer to use the
5E and DMS 100 in most of the more populous areas of the stae. The EWSD
seemed to be destined for more rural areas. I believe there are several in
the Thumb or maybe they are remoted off one host in Saginaw and a whole
group of them across the UP.

The 1A is still there. It was installed atround 1976 and I had about 300
DID stations off it in the 734-665 broken block group. Shows as
ANARMIMNCG1. Those numbers are still in service at the ITC ( former
Michigan Electric Power Coordination Ctr) over on Wagner Road. They
inherited our switch and other assets when the steel tower power lines were
spun off. IIRC that the CO trunks were also homed off that machine as
well.

Don't worry about having "missed" an era in telephony we all have regrets
mostly as we get much older but you are on the verge of being able to
bridge between the two eras. Every era is a "Golden" era. As John N said
there is still equipment available one just has to let it be known that
they are looking, watch the lists and that e place. You will be surprised
what one can accumulate in say 25 years. Right John Novack? For instance
there is a gentlemen not too far from you in Saline who has quite a bit of
accumulated SXS. He has helped out a few others on the list over time. I
would be glad to approach him on your behalf to provide a sort of
introduction.

CNET has allowed most of the participants to accomplish an unthinkable task
in the "golden age" you speak of. That being the linking and building of
an entire worldwide network! The cost of regulated special service
circuits simply prohibted any hope of 99.999% of us ever linking any
switches outside our immediate property lines as late as oh about 8-9 years
ago. One would have had to be independently wealthy to justify the costs
involved.

For many of us growing up in the 50s-60s meant that there was no wealth of
information on anything telephone related. A few old dusty Audels books at
the library to prick one's imagination and hand written letters to the
various mfgs and their reps begging for information. Some got repsonses
some didn't. I was fortunate that my dad worked on the East side of
Detroit as a stationa nd then PBX installer. I used to beg him to bring
home his discarded BSPs and read them voraciously. I still have them but
someday they will go on the block along with most of my accumulations as my
daughter has no interest in telephony.

I am not writing this as a put down or anything of the kind, only to
suggest that you become a member of TCI and the Switchers Quartely. Come
to the Labor Day show in Cinci and get to meet a few of the switchers. As
the great Washington Carver once said when asked how he was able to come up
with so many uses for the peanut he answered, "When you love the peanut as
much as I do it will reveal its inner most secrets to you." So too for
telephony.

This is a great group of folks with lots of accumulated knowledge and a
willingness to help and answer questions. You are in good company even if
you missed Mr Douglas getting the Hooterville Telephone Company for free!!
Why couldn't that have happened to me?????? ;-)

Sure am!

I grew up in Kalamazoo back before Grand Rapids stole the 616 area
code from us :).

I'm living in Ann Arbor at the moment, but am moving out to BLVLMIBV
territory in August. They're running a Siemens EWSD out there,
although I don't suppose it's likely to display (m)any characteristics
to distinguish it from the 5ESS (my current apartment) and DMS-100 (my
dad's place in Kzoo) switches I'm used to. Having been born in the
early 80s, I missed out on the golden age of phone exploration and
phreaking per se, but I've always been interested in
phone/electronic/computer/etc technology.

On another note about different types of switches, there is supposedly
a 1AESS still operating in Ann Arbor's main CO, although I have not
been able to find anyone with a line in one of the exchanges it is
said to serve that I could play around with to try to see whether it's
really on the 1A. It seems that most people my age here don't even
have a POTS line anymore, although I would imagine that new lines are
probably provisioned on the 5ESS anyway. If I weren't moving in a
couple weeks, I would consider ordering a new line and asking for a
number in one of the 1A's NXX blocks. Even then, though, I wonder if
they might simply port the number over to the 5E.

When I first found out about Asterisk a few years ago, it was just
"too much fun," and I ended up acquiring various FXS and FXO hardware
to play around with. I had already set up some silly applications and
scripts and was using the machine as a "tandem" to route my family's
international phone calls over cheap VoIP carriers when I heard about
CNET. Although I don't have any interesting electromechanical
equipment to connect to CNET, I do enjoy calling peoples' various
recordings and whatnot. Also, people can call up dynamically generated
recordings of the spam I receive at 616-0010, although I suspect it
may be of limited interest :).

Maybe someday I will acquire some vintage switching equipment, but I
suspect that by the time I have a place big enough to put it, there
won't be much left. I guess there's always the option of trying to
build one's own, though!

Cheers,
Rusty
