[VoIP] EWSD -- was Bogus CallerID

I've seen them in the CLEC environment, too. Specifically, MCI local
services turned up a number of EWSDs nationwide. Then, when WorldCom bought
MCI and a number of fiber companies, the investment in class 5 switches
ceased; they had enough. Here in the Twin Cities (of Minnesota), there is
the legacy MCI EWSD in Minneapolis, and there are two 5ESS switches -- one
in Saint Paul and one in Minneapolis -- on the legacy Brooks Fiber network.

Other than that, the only places I've heard of them being installed has been
among independent telcos, such as the one I work for.

What we have is an EWSD with very little in the way of EWSD hardware. It
was installed as an upgrade to the old Plessey Stromberg Carlson solid state
switch, the DCO.

Interestingly, the DCO has morphed into a class 5 switch, but that was (as I
understand it) a long time after the EWSD switch was rolled out to front end
the DCO via the "One Up," the gateway between the EWSD and the DCO.

Siemens has sold the Stromberg Carlson DCO platform to General Bandwidth,
makers of the G6 PSTN/IP gateway (among other products). Genband appears to
be on the ascendancy these days, their most recent acquisition being most of
Tekelec's softswitch business.

We learned to adapt to what is offered. Knowing you only have so much money
to spend on upgrades you can't have it all. Still it is odd that this
switch got installed in the metro Detroit area. Kind of an orphan.

The switch I work on in my real life is an EWSD. We offer NI2, and NI2
only. Not sure if the 5E-type PRI is even available on EWSD, but it isn't
in the software load that we have purchased from Nokia Siemens. So, our
customers have to either adapt, or use CAS/DAL. (or loop start/ground start
lines).
