[VoIP] Traditional PBX or VoIP Based?

we still have several Centrex systems. They continue to serve a good
purpose and fit. One is a 1200 line at our Nuclear Power Plant, dificult
to get in and out of and the local Telco (Now Century Tel) has bent over
backwards for the 28 years I've been here to asisit us and keep us happy.
Several major PBX vendors early on couldn't keep their techs free enough of
recreational drugs to be allowed on site. This is just for the
administrative system.
A second "Baby Centrex" is at a now decommisioned coal plant. It has only
about 60 stations and fit in where the plant could not afford to make any
needed changes to accomodate an onsite solution. 125 degress and 90%
humidity in what was passing for a phone room doesn't cut it.
Last but not least we have a Centrex at our Data Center in Ann Arbor. It
was originally structured as a lights out disaster recovery site and the
reason for Centrex was to allow a quick and easy expansion during an
emergency without iuncurring the commitment of extra hardware. It has
about 25 lines and can be expanded toi over 150 in 24 hours or at least
that is what SBC claimed.

Do people still use Centrex?
It has some advantages that might be appropriate for a municipal
emergency services facility; no capital costs, no maintenance,
very high reliability even when power is out, no surprises.
Probably not the cheapest or most flexible solution, but at least
your phones will work.
