Little box?  I don't follow. 

There was an E-signaling test set for working on E signaling units out 
of the shelf.   They plugged into the test unit instead of the shelf.  
It wasn't little though.  It either rack mounted in place of perhaps 6 
signaling units or could be mounted in a free-standing portable box.  I 
think the E-signaling BSP shows a photo of the test unit. It contained a 
bunch of stepped attenuators, large rotary switches, and the usual array 
of jacks, keys and lamps.  Is that what you are referring to?
