Did the UK have the MTS (Manual Telephone Service)
followed by the IMTS (Improved Mobile Phone Service)
system, as in the US? Wikipedia has good articles on
both these.

I have an old Motorola MTS control head and
transciver. It used several pairs of VHF frequencies.
One hunted for a free channel by listening and
punching the channel buttons one by one. IMTS added an
"idle" tone that made channel selection automatic.

The phone number was set by jumpers in the transceiver
(or a set of thumbwheels on the dash) ;-).
