The service was first introduced in late 1959 covering the South Lancashire
area between Liverpool and Manchester using two VHF transmitters - it wasn't
until 1983 that 'direct dialling' to the vehicles became possible - all call
previously were connected via the operator.
There is a brief history of the Radiophone service (through the eyes of one
of the equipment suppliers so sets show are only theirs!) at
http://www.storno.co.uk/radiophone.htm
The area code for the South Lancs Radiphone Service was (0)037 which is the
code on CNET that I use for folk who host their PC/laptop softphones off my
Asterisk !!
I can just remember the service starting as I had just started my service
with the British Post Office Telephones Engineering Department - to think
that is virtually 48 years ago !! How things have changes.
