I've had good results using an X100 clone for interfacing with my POTS
line. My loop is only about 4000 feet long though; I've heard of
problems with the X100 on longer loops but have not experienced them
myself.

I have two ports of FXS on a Digium TDM400 board, and two ports on an
external (ethernet-based) ATA, a Sipura SPA2000, I believe. All of the
fxs ports work fine, although the ATA does not support pulse dialing.
I tend to prefer the Digium FXS ports, if only because I don't have to
fight with the ATA to not enforce its own dialplan on its ports.
