Mike,

Its good to hear you are OK and still maintaining a good sounding outlook
on this. It sounds like a good thing has come from it in the fact that you
found a new place to live and get yourself out of harms way.

Best to you,

Dennis Hock

Subject: [VoIP] Update from New Orleans

Hi all!

I just wanted to give you a brief update of things here in New Orleans.

As you probably know my office and 1st floor of my house was flooded with 3
feet of water. All 3 of my switchboards and the power supply and connector
shelf of my switch were flooded. We were lucking in the sense that all the
living space was on the second floor of my house which is common for older
homes here. Unfortunately, my wife lost here office and all her clothes
which were on the first floor.

We had great insurance so that was not a problem. My wife went on shopping
spree to replace here clothes and I went on a shopping spree to replace my
tools. I'm a state licensed electrical and mechanical contractor. We were
able to seal off the first floor and we are now camped out on the second
floor. We bought a house north of the lake and are currently renovating it.
I can't wait to move there because we are far enough north that we will
never have to evacuate again. And the best part is that we will be well
above sea level so flooding is not an issue instead of well below it like
we are here. BTW - the house across the lake is on 1.5 acres. It's like
owning your own park. Think of the outside plant I can create!!!!

Things have slowed down in my business enough for me to get back to my
hobbies. So, if anyone knows of a power supply or other parts, contact me
off the list.

The hurricane helped to further my telephone hobby in one way. Bellsouth
pulled out a lot of copper cables and replaced them with fiber. They cut
out the splices and left them laying around. I got a bunch of them. 1200
pair pulp, pic, lead sheathed, all different types of splicing techniques.
They are now in my collection.

I don't know what you are hearing on your local news, but if you want to
know how things are here from my perspective, email me either on or off the
list.

In the process of getting Asterisk up and running, I knew I had made
backups of my configuration files. I went back to my flooded out office
and do you know I found them! They were on my desk behind my monitor and I
was able to read them! So I don't have to re-invent the wheel. Hopefully
I'll be on the net minus a step switch as soon as Bellsouth, sorry, ATT
gives me a fixed IP.

Thanks for everything,

Mike Zaiontz
