Welcome Brent a great job for both you and IAN. Roger Copnklin may know
about other WE Rotary. Roger are you reading this?

Hi

As I am the Brent of Motat I'll jump in here .
The problem we seemed to have was every so often the Motat Asterisk box
would not connect with Ian's Asterisk box.
We still don't know why. The Motat IT guy said we had the ports open etc.
But it was/is one of those annoying intermittent problems. Ian had spent
time where he rang the Motat Asterisk box every half
hour and he could hear the digits read back from the extension . But on
the
two occasions I rushed in early especially to turn
on the Western Electric Rotary he could not even get the digits to
playback.

Once again this morning same thing happened. I had given up for the day on
it but Ian hadn't I was standing near the Rotary talking
to other members of the Telecomms section. We had turned off the Rotary to
do something then had just started it up again.
Suddenly the Linefinders start spinning and one of the other guys says "Is
that Ian calling?" . Sure enough it was and so I
grabbed all the guys in our section and got them to talk to Ian. I was so
overjoyed it worked I forgot to take a photo.

Just for those of you who interested this is how our basic CNET setup
works.
After frying a XP100 card while trying to pulse dial into a Step by Step
demonstration unit I decided to retreat to fight another day.
So our setup is now an Asterisk box with a TDM400 card that has 2 FXO and 2
FXS cards. One of the FXO is connected
to an extension on a SBX8 , ( a small office PABX - late 70's early 80's,
12 extensions - 3 trunks, double reed relay matrix switching).
The SBX8 can use DTMF or pulse dial on the extensions without the need for
programming. The trunks can be programmed
to use either DTMF or Pulse dialing out. In our case we set the trunk for
pulse dialing. Another good thing is for you to be able to program the
access number for the trunk so it will always pick the one you want. With
some waits thrown in the dial plan to allow the Rotary time to
find the SBX8 this system seems to work well.

Here is a general question for all of you. Does anyone know where there is
any other Western Electric Rotary exchanges that are operational?
These can either be demonstration units or working exchanges?

I just wish to publicly thank Ian Jolly for all his help and patience with
this project. Without his assistance this project would have been
a lot harder to complete.

Brent
