John,
Spamcop, Spam Assassin and others that use Black and White Lists used to be
effective but the problem with them nowadays is the spammers themselves.
Not only do they send you spam, but they purloin your email address to forge
as the 'from' address and you find yourself ending up in the black list - I
know because it has happened to me - you don't realise until you suddenly
find, usually after a few days, that you are not getting any response to your
emails because you've been labelled as a spammer.
