[VoIP] APC UPS question about the battery

Hi,

     I recently bought an APC UPS for my father for Christmas. I never
thought about the health of the battery, otherwise I'd have probably waited
until closer to time. Anyway, I know that it used to be that some batteries
needed to stay charging if not in use, for the continued health of the
battery. As far as I know, this UPS does not have the battery connected.
It's not been taken out of the box. Should I leave it like that until
Christmas, take it out, connect the battery, and leave it plugged in and
turned on so as to have the battery continuously charging until right around
Christmas day, or what? I'll almost certainly need sighted help to connect
the battery terminals. Thanks for any help.
