[VoIP] Cisco 3810's

IMO, the 3810's do DP (and MF) very well. This product was a multi-thousand dollar product intended for early voice/data integration for branch office applications; not a home product. The ATA186/188 are horrible products but the 3810 seems to work very well.

I just wish I could get SIP to T1 working!

I do need to do some testing with a 3810 NAT'd behind some dynamically changing IP end-point. It is possible to configure the gateway with a DNS name as the following commands illustrate (but I didn't test this and not 100% sure the port number appendage actuall works)

BatPhone(config-sip-ua)#sip-server dns:asteriskgateway.cnetsystem.com
BatPhone(config-sip-ua)#sip-server dns:asteriskgateway.cnetsystem.com:5060
BatPhone(config-sip-ua)# sip-server ipv4:192.168.0.20:5060

The last line is what I actually use but with non-static public IP's on the Asterisk side, it doesn't help much.

Does anyone have a often changing public IP address on there CNET Asterisk system that I could test a remote 3810 with. My doesn't change very much so the testing would appear to work better than I'd expect in the real world.

John

The docs say the can do DP as well as DTMF. I'm curious to see how
well that works as some of Cisco's other stuff doesn't do DP very well.

I think this is available in many different configurations, but yes,
it seems that you could use it as a simple voice gateway in front of a
channel bank, or just use the analog ports on it.

You might need to configure it "statically" in your Asterisk system.
I don't know that the code for these supports registering like an ATA
does. That is one of the things I want to find out when I get them.
This is easy to do when you are on the same LAN, but if you want to
put it behind something that does NAT *and* may change it's WAN-Side
IP address, it could be a little more difficult.

In an ideal world, these could be packaged up for non-IP savvy
switchers to tandem off of somone elses system. Just send out the
3810 pre-configured and ready to go!
