I think the goals of the two were different.  Chad's tests that he can  
actually place a call to the system and get something expected back,  
so it *should* check a published number.

The function that I was doing was more of routing configuration  
verification / number inventory checking system
.
Basically the goal was to walk through all of the office codes, see if  
they had entries in DNS and see if the far-end actually had anything  
asterisk-like listening for connections.

Chad tests to verify (to some extent) that the far end is configured  
correctly (does he get what he expects when he calls the number).

I would just verify there is *something* on the far end accepting IAX2  
connections at all.

I suppose an ultimate test would be to see if you reach something  
beyond the Asterisk system (in the case of tandems).
