Well, it has already been done. Several times.
When my HD failed on my Asterisk box, I continued my connectivity with
CNET with an HP thin client with 64 Meg of flash, 256Meg of ram and a 1
Gig flash for the configuration files, using AstLinux
It worked quite well for a month or more, though with a few of my frills
not connected.
Two US members of CNET, at least, are using the Linksys router running
openwrt as their asterisk box.
All the above mentioned devices have no hard drive and no fan. The Cisco
3810 used as a 6 port ATA does have a very small very quiet fan.
There will soon be two more US CNET members joining the group with
similar devices.
AstLinux needs about 48 Meg of space, plus a key disk which can be a 2nd
partition on a very small HD, so your 1,2 and 4 gig drives could easily
be used with an old processor to run Asterisk and connect to CNET.
Unknown what specific hardware limitations may be waiting to get you
though, I so far only have experience with the HP thin clients.
